Circuit Breakers

A circuit breaker is an electrical switch designed to automatically protect an electrical circuit from damage caused by an overload or a short circuit. Unlike fuses, circuit breakers can be reset to resume normal operation and don’t have to be replaced when one trips. Circuit breakers vary in size so it is always important to call the a licensed electrician, like those at Got Watts Electric™ when adding or replacing circuit breakers in your electrical panel.

If a circuit breaker is installed correctly, it will detect a fault and trip, protecting your electrical system and the devices connected to it. The circuit breaker contacts must carry the load current without excessive heating and must also withstand the heat of the arc produced when interrupting the circuit. When an electric current is interrupted, an arc is generated. This arc must be contained, cooled and extinguished in a controlled way, so that the gap between the contacts can again withstand the voltage in the circuit. Finally, once the fault condition has been cleared, the contacts must again be closed to restore power to the interrupted circuit.

Another good reason to call the licensed electricians at Got Watts Electric™ is because there are many different types of circuit breakers that can be made, based on their features such as voltage, construction type, interrupting type, and structural features. A few of the most common types of circuit breakers are are low-voltage circuit breakers, magnetic circuit breakers and common trip breakers. Without having the knowledge of exactly what your electrical needs are, you will be putting you and your family at risk for an electrical hazard situation
